Two Heartbreaks

Big Fishes' Carnival at The Lake - Two Heartbreaks

He was not joking.

Celine was sure that there were no speck of lies in the words of the "demon". She was always good at reading people and recognizing which was truth, cry or lie. She could count on her ability anytime: under the greatest of stress, the smokiest of dizziness, anytime. She was not wrong that time, either.

The "demon" said : There can only be one survivor. Or none.

So Celine knew that there was absolutely no way that both her and Randy could escape together safely. Her vision slowly became hazy and the knife seemed so far away. She would love to discuss things with Randy; he was always the wise, careful man able to find solutions if he was to sit back and think for a moment. The problem is that time was running out.

The "demon" said : There can only be one survivor. Or none.

Celine was the type of girl who was always eager to gain more knowledge. She preferred reading books in the library in her free time. That was why Celine had not only broad but also deep knowledge about many things outside school curriculum. That was why Celine knew full well of the Sarin gas.

Nasty substance; it eats away the fragile life of human being, bit by bit, and a certain dose of it inhaled by any normal person ensures instant kill. Even if the doze was much smaller than required, the slightest exposure of it could cause prolonged disease and damages to the body. Celine was sure that Randy was but a normal human being, and that was exactly why he needed to get out of that room as soon as possible.

The "demon" said : there can only be one survivor. Or none.

The "demon" said : Let one's heartbreak save another.

Celine feared death. Not even the thought of heaven welcoming the soul could ease her heart and cease her fear. However, if living was not a choice, she would prefer her life to be sacrificed for the sake of the one she loved. And so she stood, determined that her life would continue to write Randy's stories and memories from up above. She walked, although fear still creeping up her feet and crippled her walking, she walked.

However, ran the muscular figure, to the blade that determined the one to live on. A spark of regret electrocuted her heart; had her resolve to save Randy was strong enough, she would have rushed, not even once hesitating, to grab that knife and stopped the "demon" from devouring more than necessary. Now lying in front of her, the body of the man that saved her life, blood oozing out from his chest. She could not even react to the pain piercing through her heart upon seeing her beloved threw his life for her so easily.

The gas subsided. The door opened. The "demon" laughed.

Celine was then, for a moment, a living body lacking soul. Nothing that happened around her was inputted to her brain; she was numb. The "demon" was cunning, for even when he gave the chances to humans, he knew full well that he would always get the ending that he wanted. As expected from the world's most wanted criminal: his plans were perfect till the end. She fell silent.

"It seemed none survived the heartbreak."

People say you could not be too correct. People makes mistakes.
